Hands-on General Manager

Onitaw Organic Farm

Our Farms

We have 3 organic properties in our business; with two of these being dairy farms and the other a runoff - all of which are in the Opunake area. All three properties are within 15 mins of each other, and we run them as a single operation. We are an organic pasture-based system, supported with some purchased silage.

Onitaw Dairy Farm is 117 effective hectares of flat dairy land, located 10 mins from Opunake township. We spring calve 340 cows and milk OAD all season through a 30-a-side herringbone cowshed with auto teat sprayer. Mating is 9 weeks total, with 3 weeks of AI and 6 weeks of bulls. Calving date of 20th July.

Sajo Dairy Farm is 57 effective hectares of flat dairy land, located 15 mins from Opunake township and 10mins from Manaia. We spring calve 200 cows and milk OAD all season through an 18-a-side herringbone cowshed with auto teat sprayer. Mating is 9 weeks total, with 3 weeks of AI and 6 weeks of bulls. Calving date of 20th July.

Runoff is 55 Effective hectares and is located within 15mins of both Dairy Farms. The runoff grazes all youngstock from weaning to returning to the herd (roughly 100 head of R1s and 100 head of R2s) and winter grazes roughly 75% of the dairy cows each winter for 5 weeks.
