Mō te tūnga | About the role

We are looking for an Environment Officer to become a member of our Biodiversity team within Environment Services. Our Biodiversity Strategy describes our vision for Taranaki ecosystems, species and our community. The four priorities for action are; working with landowners to protect and manage priority sites, building on Council programmes, working collectively with others to achieve biodiversity outcomes and information management and gathering. The role of Environment Officer –Biodiversity has three main areas of responsibility; managing site-led protection programmes, biodiversity monitoring and providing guidance on biodiversity protection.

It goes without saying that we need an Environment Officer who brings energy, enthusiasm and excellent project management skills. Great communication skills and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships are essential. There is no typical day but expect to have plenty of variety. You'll be based in our office in Stratford so you can connect and collaborate with your team. However, you'll spend loads of time out in the Taranaki region connecting with the many different community stakeholders - whether that's in the forest, on the coast, in rural areas or urban centres.

We like to set people up for success so you'll be a leading applicant if you have:

A tertiary qualification or at least two years experience in a relevant field
Technical and practical proficiency and competency relevant to biodiversity protection and management.
Confidence to build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders like landowners, iwi, hapū and community groups
Excellent communication skills
Strong organisational skills
Ability to work effectively on your own and collaborate as part of a team
A solution-oriented mind set with a willingness to share your learnings with others
Energy and passion
Confident working in a range of outdoor environments
