Explore 142km of the Forgotten World railway by petrol-powered rail carts along the disused railway line between Taumarunui and Stratford and immerse yourself in remote, stunning New Zealand scenery.
The 142km long historic Stratford-Okahukura Line (SOL) with its 24 hand-cut tunnels and 90 plus hand-made bridges traverses the Forgotten World, one of New Zealand’s most remote regions in the Central North Island. We are experts in guided experiences throughout this spectacularly beautiful destination, offering six unique adventures, each featuring an iconic self-driven rail cart journey on the line which runs between Taumarunui and Stratford.
Heralded to this day as a remarkable feat of engineering, the heritage line and its region is steeped in history. The railway was built as a secondary route to the Main Trunk line and opened up this hinterland for farming, trade and industry. Construction began in 1901 and took nearly 32 years to complete. Abandoned since 2009, the SOL now serves as our playground and is central to the Forgotten World story. Our experiences offer the chance to learn about the people and places history has since left behind and those who’ve managed to survive.
Guests have control of their own rail cart (2, 4 and 6 seaters available) which travel at a leisurely yet thrilling pace of 22km/hr (maximum). Every twist and turn of the line brings a new vista; the ever-changing landscape is dramatic and truly breathtaking. Each experience features scheduled stops for commentary and visits to backcountry townships and points of interest along the line. Be immersed in Māori history and enjoy passionate storytelling about the early settlers and hardy pioneers whilst venturing through pristine native bush and deep hidden valleys.
Suitable for all ages and abilities, our experiences can also include jet boating on the Whanganui River (we offer the longest commercial jet boat ride in the Southern Hemisphere), a helicopter flight over the National Park and visits to the Whangamōmona Hotel and Bridge to Nowhere amongst other historic landmarks and attractions including Blue Duck Station and Lauren’s Lavender Farm.
Discover the people and places history left behind; be transported to a bygone era and embark on one of the most authentic and enchanting experiences New Zealand has to offer. Journey with us into wild New Zealand and a Forgotten World – you won’t be disappointed!
