We have an exciting opportunity for a Technical Officer to join our team.

About us

The Taranaki Regional Council works with the Taranaki community to help make the region a fantastic place to live, play and do business.

Our mission is to work for a thriving Taranaki by promoting the sustainable use, development and protection of Taranaki's natural and physical resources, while advocating for the regions interests.

About the role

The role of the Technical Officer is to provide technical assistance and support across the full range of work programmes being delivered by the Science Services group, including consent compliance and state of the environment monitoring work. This role has a specific focus on freshwater biological monitoring, including invertebrates and fish, but will also include elements of surface water physicochemical, groundwater quality, coastal/marine and general environmental monitoring work. You will be responsible for the timely planning, co-ordination and collection of data in the field and ensuring that data is managed appropriately to ensure it meets relevant quality standards. In some instances you may also be required to review and analyse the data collected, assess consent compliance, and report results to other staff and/or external parties.

This role will offer the successful candidate a great mixture of field and office work and exposure to a wide range of challenging and technically diverse work on which to progress their career.

About you

The ideal candidate will have an appropriate qualification in a relevant science discipline. Specific skills in the area of freshwater biological/ecological monitoring would be advantageous, as would previous experience in environmental monitoring. Familiarity with relevant legislation and strong report writing skills are desirable.

The Council is a busy environment where you will enjoy learning new monitoring skills across a range of science disciplines and be comfortable undertaking field based work, in sometimes challenging conditions. You will be able to demonstrate strong initiative and problem solving skills, which will be regularly tested in this role. The ability to work effectively when working autonomously, or as a member of a small team, is a must, as is a current full driver's licence.

To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate the following:
•Ability to be flexible and agile in your practice to provide outcome
•Strong organisation skills and attention to detail
•Ability to manage multiple jobs
