In Taranaki, there are educational options for everyone from early childcare through to tertiary institutions and adult education classes.

New arrivals to region will find a range of schooling options for their children including state schools, state integrated and private schools. Education Counts is a useful tool for finding information about Taranaki schools. Note, school zones apply in some areas of the region.

Education Counts

Taranaki students get an education that prepares the for the future.

The region is one of three who host the Curious Minds Project that has seen dozens of local schools actively undertaking real life community science projects.

The region’s environment, lifestyle and can-do attitude meant that in 2020 Green School New Zealand opened. Modelled on the iconic Green School in Bali, the school first of its kind outside of Bali.

For those wanting the next step. Sector specific training is provided by Industry Training Organisations (ITOs), and tertiary education by the WITT and PIHMS. Apprenticeships are managed and promoted by a number of different organisations and some larger companies provide internships or graduate opportunities as part of their recruitment programmes.

Taranaki also has a dedicated education to employment organisation, Taranaki Futures, who facilitate innovative programmes like Build a Bridge Civil construction project, a Māori and Pasifica Trades Training Academy, and Accelerator, a programme aimed at connecting senior high school students to employers.

Our students go onto have great careers, with many choosing to study at local tertiary providers Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) and Pacific International Hotel Management School (PIHMS), or further field around New Zealand and around the world.
